Anthony Wang, Candidate for BL Sports Officer

Role Description: Joining a sports club (we have over 60!) can be a great way to pursue passions and build strong friendships. Every year, we have thousands of new students eager to get involved and the Sports Officer plays an important role in being the voice of these students. As a Sports Officer, you will be given the opportunity to develop and approve new clubs, plan and deliver events as well as allocate funding, all while working closely with Students’ Union staff. You’d also ensure that BLSA sports clubs and the Students’ Union maintain strong communication so that everything runs smoothly!

What's your favourite moment from being a student here?

Merger Cup! I had so much fun watching all the matches at Chislehurst. It was amazing to be surrounded by people equally proud of our sports teams, and I particularly enjoyed all the very inventive chants (!) The best part of the day was definitely when we found out we won at The Griff and seeing everybody go mad.

What's something you've done that you're proud of?

Buying a new boat for the Boat Club is something I’m very proud of, and my experience is part of what I think would make me a good Sports Officer. It was a huge administrative task working with various BLSA and QMSU staff, involving lots of emails and phone calls. Seeing everything come together on delivery day was incredibly rewarding.

What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?

Accessibility to sports clubs is still an issue facing students. The start of the academic year is a busy time for us all, with Freshers’ Fayre being not dissimilar to speed dating! Unsurprisingly, not everybody will find the right fit the first time round. Sport plays a huge part in many of our university experiences, and is a fantastic outlet for any stress from our degrees. I want to help more students find the perfect group for them by creating a ‘cheat sheet’ of what each club does in September, and running a proper ‘re-freshers’ event in January so that nobody gets left out.
